How to write a topic sentence

To write a great topic sentence, you need to be sure that you don't give away too much information. If you give away too much or go into too much detail, you won't have much else to write about in your paragraph. Just hint at or introduce your topic in a general way.

Step 1: Restate Question
Step 2: Introduce topic in a general way

President Obama argues that the school year should be longer. Why do you agree or disagree with his idea?

Option 1: I do not agree with President Obama saying that the school year should be longer.

Option 2: I do not agree with President Obama saying that the school year should be longer because it is counterproductive and children need breaks.

Option 3: There are two reasons why I do not agree with President Obama's plan to extend the school year.

Notice that Option 1 is very simple, but gets the job done. Option 2 is a bit more complicated, but I don't give away too much information yet, do I? :) You know what to generally expect. Option 3 is also a bit more complicated than Option 1, but not as complicated as Option 2. This also introduces the topic in a very general way. Any of these options are good!

Write me if you have questions about the homework.

Mr. D.
