Explanation of the ELA Test Grading


ELA Score Explanation

Performance Level 4:  The best that you can possibly do.  Excellent mastery of English.

Performance Level 3:  Very good mastery of English.  You did a great job on the test.

Performance Level 2:  You show a weak mastery of English.  Most people fail the ELA because of doing poorly on the multiple-choice portion of the test.

Percentages:  The percentage that it takes to pass changes each year.  For the practice test, I used a generous 70% passing rate.  That means if you had 23/34 or higher, you passed.    22 and below earned a performance level of a 2 and failed.

Books 2 and 3 Explanation

You can score 1-5 on Books 2 and 3 for your clarity and understanding of the stories.

5=Very clear writing and insightful understanding of the stories.
4=Clear writing and good understanding of the stories.
3=A bit unclear writing with some confusion about the stories.
2=The writing is very unclear and shows a great deal of confusion about the stories.
1=The writing is very unclear and shows no understanding of the stories.

You can also score 1-3 on your Grammar and Mechanics.

3=Very few mistakes with spelling/grammar/mechanics.  Mistakes usually a result of elevated vocabulary.
2=A few mistakes with spelling/grammar/mechanics that make reading a bit harder.
1=Many mistakes with spelling/grammar/mechanics that make reading very hard.
