"Life is a hot dog," has a very significant meaning to the book Touching Spirit Bear. "Life is a hot dog" means that life is what you make it, so make of it what you will. You can either make eating a hot dog a feast, or a meal. In the story, Garvey takes a hot dog and celebrates life with it, but Cole takes the hot dog and thinks of it as simply food. Garvey is trying to show Cole that he has the choice between focusing on happiness or anger, it's all what he makes of it. The hot dog resembles life; you can either be thankful for it, or gulp it down and never think twice. By comparing life to a hot dog, Garvey means that all life is choices, so choose wisely.
