More common mistakes from paragraph #3

Today we talked about the ways to use affect and effect.

Effect is used as a noun.
Affect is used as a verb.

99% of the time this is correct!

Example:

Simon Cowell has a strange effect on me.
***I'm using effect as a noun here. He does THINGS to me.

Simon Cowell's attitude affects many idols' performances.
***Simon changes people's performances. Changes is a verb here!

The other 1% that you can talk about is affect used as a noun. You might describe how a person looks and presents himself as their affect. If you say that a person has a flat affect, they don't really show any emotion at all.
