Chapters 17-19: Good readers can summarize chapters in a word

It's pretty easy to summarize a chapter in a book and discuss what it's about. Something that's more difficult is trying to think hard about a chapter then shrink it down into one word! Wow, imagine that...one word to summarize a chapter. In other words, you're finding the heart of the chapter.

Here's the skill:

Good readers can pick a great word to summarize what a chapter is about. Notice how I used the word great? You don't want to use words like "good," "bad," or "happy." Dig deeper, think more, and try harder. Find that perfect word!

Starter:

Chapter #__: ______________ (One word)

This chapter is all about ______________. One way to show this is __________________________________________________.

Here is my sample writing:

Chapter 17: Despair

This chapter is all about despair. One way to show this is at the end of the chapter. Santiago feels horrible inside because he loses the fish hook. It's like his whole entire world is over! He wishes that he wasn't so stupid and thought more in advance. He doesn't know what he'll do now to catch fish. Without fish, their chance of survival dwindles.
