Tunes for Bears to Dance To, Chapter 3: How Characters Treat Each Other

Today in class we began to read Chapter 3 of Tunes for Bears to Dance To by Robert CormierHere is the skill that we discussed:

Skill #2-->Good readers think about how characters treat each other and what that tells us about them.

We first see Mr. Hairston being very nice to Mrs. Pierce, but as soon as she leaves Mr. Hairston is ridiculing her and her "hairy wart."  This shows us that Mr. Hairston is two-faced and behaves like a back stabber.  He'll be nice to your face, but very quickly he'll turn around and say nasty things about you when you are gone.

We also see how he treats his daughter, Doris.  We already see that he's not such a nice person, so we wonder what kind of dad he is.  As readers, we're a frightened because we realize that the bruise on Doris' face might be there because she is beaten by her dad!

Finally, in the chapter we see Henry praying for Doris, Eddie, and the rest of his family.  This shows us that Henry is a good kid who really cares about people and wants them to be happy.  This seems like it's a pretty big contrast to how Mr. Hairston treats people!

For homework, you need to pick one of your reactions from class and explain why you should or shouldn't use one of the characters as a role model.
