A Character's Struggles and Desires Build Your Fiction Stories

I talked about how characters in stories have struggles and desires.  These struggles and desires are what make the story interesting and hooks the reader.

We looked at my story and I began to think about how this relates to Rob.

Struggle:  To tell about his abuse
Desire:  To be free and loved

Next, I had to think about creating mini-scenes that would act like bricks in the "wall" of my story.  Each scene I created would have to illustrate my character's struggle or his deepest desire.

Here are two examples:

1)  Rob stays after school often for extra help.  As he stays more and more, he grows attached to Ms. Lago.  He wants to tell her, but he's too afraid to.

2) Rob writes a secret diary and dreams of giving it to Ms. Lago or Mrs. Bloom.  This would be his way of telling the truth.

Example 1 shows how much he struggles with telling the truth and exposing his dad for what he is.
Example 2 shows also shows how much he struggle, but will also show his desire to be free and loved because that will be the focus of a few journal entries.
