How to Use Transitions in Stories

Using transitions in your story



Transition words and phrases are essential in linking up scenes in our stories.  Without transition words, our story will seem jumpy, awkward, and confusing.  Here are some ideas on how to create transitions from scene to scene:

Create a transition in setting:
            After we got out of the car…
            When we opened the door...
           
Create a transition based on time:
            The next day...
             After finally talking to him...

Create a large break in time by:
            Skipping two lines
            Centering    ***    between two paragraphs

Create a heading to show a time shift:
            Two Days Later
            The Next Day
