  Im anwsering questions 1-4 from the study guide. The questions are in purple and the anwsers are in green.

Question #1: Why is Cole the way he is?

Anwser #1 : Cole is the way he is because that was all he knew and had learned. All his life, Cole's father had beaten Cole every time he was mad. He took all his anger out on Cole. Now when Cole is mad he too follows what his father does and takes his anger out on people like Peter. Cole's father beats Cole because that is what he was taught because when he was Cole's age his parents beat him too so now he does it to Cole.

Question #2 :  In your opinion, how does Cole change from the start of the book to the end?

Anwser #2:    In the beginning of the book Cole was really angry all the time. Cole blamed the world and everyone for his problems. He kept saying he wanted to change and help Peter over and over again but he really didn't. Cole just kept saying that to maybe avoid jail. Cole was like a baby faced con that never really took life seriously since he never had faced the consequences of all the troubles he caused. But at the end of the book Cole has really changed. He is no longer angry and had learned that it is better to look at all the good things in his life instead of always focusing on the bad things. Cole now really wants to help Peter since he realized he can't heal until he does. When Peter starts to beat up Cole, Cole finds that he no longer wants to fight. He doesn't get mad at all. Cole really wants Peter to forgive him and just be friends instead of enemies.

Question #3: What do you think will happen after the story ends?

Anwser #3 I think that after the story ends Cole and Peter would slowly end up as really good friends. Since at the end of the chapter it said that they were carving a circle at the bottom of the totem. Also on the last page of the book Peter grins and Cole and says " A circle was all I could teach him to carve." Before when Peter first got got the island he wouldn't even look at Cole and now he is grinning at him.

Question #4: Why did Cole decide to stay longer on the island

Anwser #4  Cole decided to stay longer on the island so he could help heal Peter. Cole wants Peter to do all the things he had done when he got to the island. For example, Cole carried the ancestor rock, soaked in the pond, e.t.c to get rid of his anger and heal. Cole wants Peter to do everything he did so he could heal too like Cole. Cole Knew that if Peter didn't heal, Cole wouldn't be able to heal either.
