Chapter 22, Red Midnight: Good readers find meaning in poetic devices

In class today, we read Chapter 22 of Red Midnight by Ben Mikaelsen and worked on our new skill:

Good readers look for metaphors, similes, personification, and other poetic devices and figure out their meanings.

Here's a good starter for your thoughts:

_________ (author) uses _______________ (poetic device) on page ___.

Sample thought:

Ben Mikaelsen uses personification on page 161.  He says the ocean is now calm, but yesterday it wanted to kill him!  This is personification because the ocean has no feelings and doesn't act with a mind.  Mikaelsen personifies the ocean because he wants to show how the ocean can't be trusted and how it's always changing.
