How to answer the extended response of the NYS ELA

Book 2 Extended Response for the ELA

Prep Work

1) Underline what you are being asked to do.
2) Circle all the tasks that you are being asked to complete.
3) As you write out your response, cross off the circles when you’ve completed the tasks.
4) Brainstorm what your ideas will be about.  This part won’t be graded, but will help you.

Paragraph 1 (At least 5 sentences)

1) Paraphrase what you are being asked to do for the first story/article/poem.
2) State and explain two details to prove your point.

Paragraph 2 (At least 6 sentences)

3) Paraphrase what you are being asked to do (use different language this time) for the second story/article/poem.  Use a transition.
4) State and explain two details to prove your point.
5) Conclude by adding an interesting thought, asking a question, or by reflecting in a deeper way.  Don’t just write, “This is the end of my essay.”  Be creative!
