Tunes for Bears to Dance To: 55-65, Motives

In Pages 55-65 of Tunes for Bears to Dance To, we see Henry's dad going to the hospital to get therapy so that he can no longer be depressed.  Henry is upset about this and begins to cry.  After this, Henry is working at the store and sneaks a peek at the monument sketch.  He sees that Mr. Hairston has crossed off the sketch with black crayons.  Then, Mr. Hairston tells Henry that he's fired and will finish the week off.  Henry is hurt and walks around town and goes to the art center.  We find out that Mr. Levine has just won first place in the city art contest.  His village will be on display in a celebration on Saturday.  Henry is invited.

Today, we talked about our next skill, #4:

Good readers examine the motives of characters.

In these pages, we talked about why Mr. Hairston would fire Henry and cross off the monument.  Many people said that he might not like that Henry was talking with Mr. Levine, a Jewish person.  This proves very important to understanding the book in a few chapters.
