Weaving setting into our stories

Without setting, readers would be lost in our stories and would probably give up.  A good writer works in setting, here and there, and makes the story very visual.  By providing images of where and when the story is happening, we make our stories better.

Here are three ways to weave in setting:

1) We can add direction or movement in dialogue:
"Hey, Julia," John said as he walked across the dry lawn, "I have something for you."

2)  We can just add description to a scene or dialogue:
As he walked on, leaves crackled under his feet, he jumped over the puddles, and the crisp air bit at his nose.

3)  We can think about adding time as we write:
It was getting darker and Julie knew that her mom would want her home.  Plus, those cold Novembers weren't easy to handle either.  It was almost cold enough to freeze!
